Black History Month for February 8: Dr. Patricia Bath developed the medical discipline known as community ophthalmology which serves underserved areas. She started this after noticing Black patients had twice the rate of blindness to white patients.

Today is Monday, February 8th, 2021 This day in history: 1887 The Dawes Act authorizes the President of the United States to survey Native American tribal land and divide it into individual allotments. Those who accepted allotments and lived separately from the tribe were granted United States citizenship. Interesting fact: John Lewis fought for equality during the civil rights movement, marching with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., against oppression and risking his life for justice. Through grit and determination, he went from sitting on bus seats as an act of civil disobedience during the Freedom Rides to sitting in the halls of Congress as a champion for civil liberties. Good Evening LES Parents! In a communication earlier this week I informed you that on Friday's early dismissal day that the students would be dismissed at 11:15. In an effort to minimize issues with the bus routes, the elementary building will now dismiss at 11:00 AM on Friday. Today is Thursday, February 4th, 2021 This day in history: 1789 1st US electoral college chooses George Washington as President and John Adams as Vice-President Fun fact: George Washington Carver was a scientist and an inventor who found hundreds of uses for peanuts. He experimented with the legumes to make lotions, flour, soups, dyes, plastics, and gasoline. He was born into slavery in the 1860s. After slavery was abolished, he was able to get an education and his contributions to the field of agriculture would not be forgotten. Black History Month daily fact: February 3: John Mercer Langston was the first Black man to become a lawyer, passing the bar in 1854. He was also one of the first African Americans ever elected to public office in the US.

Anyone interested in joining in the fun gets to check out a wrapped book from the library display and borrow it for a week (or longer if needed!) Then they fill out the “rate your date” form and return it to the library staff to be entered into a drawing for prizes. This event will run the entire month of February.
